PLACE MATTERS Initiative - Common Health Action

CommonHealth ACTION (CHA) serves as the lead consultant to PLACE MATTERS, a national initiative sponsored by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, Health Policy Institute through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Place Matters convenes county/city-based teams to develop and implement strategies that address the social determinants of health using data, policy change, and capacity-building.

As the lead consultants, CHA provides comprehensive technical assistance planning for the initiative and intensive technical assistance and facilitation for 16 county/city-based teams. With each team, CHA engages in strategic planning efforts to address the social determinants of health at the local level through:

1.    identifying the social determinants and policy targets,
2.    helping teams engage diverse partners and maximize team capacity, and
3.    encouraging upstream thinking.

CHA assists the teams in developing detailed strategic plans and logic models that guide their work to improve health outcomes through addressing their targeted determinants. CHA also provides communications and content development expertise to the initiative through its management of the PLACE MATTERS Web site.

A major component of the initiative are the Design Labs, where participating teams are given the opportunity to learn from national-level subject-matter experts, as well as from their fellow PLACE MATTERS team members across the country.

CHA has developed and implemented both the logistics and content development for all eleven (11) Design Labs since the inception of PLACE MATTERS in 2006. Each Design Lab involves coordinating the logistic arrangements for approximately 100 participants, and includes tasks such as travel, online registration, communications, development of meeting materials, community site visits, contract negotiations, and on-site facility coordination.
