Urban Design Methods for Safety: Lecture - HUD Program Support Division Regional Office IV

Mr. Nkosi was invited to speak at the H.U.D. Regional Office in Atlanta to share some of his urban design research in the area of promoting urban safety by way of site design and mixed land-use.

Key issues raised in the lecture were as follows:

(1) The orientation of building fronts to the streets.

(2) The width of sidewalks in a city.

(3) The role of streets and social interaction.

(4) The form of Sunbelt Cities and the automobile.

(5) The relationship of children and active street live.

This session stimulated a generous amount of debate on the use of walls and fences in residential development in cities and relationships of citizens to one another in classic pedestrian oriented cities and newer automobile oriented cities.
