Bettina Byrd-Giles

Bettina Byrd-Giles is founder and president of The Byrd’s Nest, LLC.  Her expertise includes cultural competence, intercultural communication and health disparities. She has been a consultant for medical research projects to recruit and retain study participants from different cultures. Ms. Byrd-Giles is a Culture of Health Leader, a program committed to eliminating health disparities and building an equitable playing field for patients from all cultures and backgrounds. The CoHL program is sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Community Health Action and the National Collaborative for Health Equity. Ms. Byrd-Giles is a state representative for the Southeastern Health Equity Council. She is also a member of the Gulf States Health Policy Coalition. She also serves on local health promotion collaboratives. 

Ms. Byrd-Giles has been an instructor in African American Studies and Race and Ethnicity in Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She served as a consultant to the Children’s Defense Fund’s Southern Rural Black Woman’s Initiative. She facilitated listening sessions in three states and participated in an exchange between SRBWI and women’s organizations in India. 

She has been recognized on both local and international levels, including her appointment as co-chair of the Martin Luther King Conflict Resolution Conference in Malawi in Southern Africa that is sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation, University of Malawi, Miles College, and Diversity University. She also was honored by the Greater Birmingham United Nations Association for founding Diversity University, a cross-cultural program involving six colleges and universities. 

Ms. Byrd-Giles holds certificates in intercultural communication from the Intercultural Communication Institute. She is a qualified administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI).  Ms. Byrd-Giles completed graduate studies in education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and undergraduate studies in international relations from the University of Virginia.
