Makiyah Moody

Makiyah’s career spans across multiple educational nonprofits aimed at ensuring educational access and equity.  Her diverse experiences and knowledge in program management, event planning, research and writing make her an ideal fit for her current role at the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools.  As Governance Initiatives Director, she recruits and trains charter school board members through a program called The Top Shelf and procures governance resources for charter schools throughout the state.

Previously Makiyah served as the Executive Director, Leading Educators - Greater New Orleans and prior to that as Managing Director of Finance & Operations at KIPP LEAD College Prep Charter School in Gary, Indiana.  Her professional experiences at KIPP LEAD included program design and execution, budget management, and grantwriting.  For three years prior to joining the staff at KIPP LEAD, Makiyah worked at the KIPP Foundation in Chicago. In this capacity, Makiyah built and executed all elements of a professional development program for KIPP teachers and personnel, including KIPP School Summit, content-specific conferences and national school visits. 

Makiyah received her B.A. in Hispanic Studies (magna cum laude) from Wheaton College and her M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago including a year at the Universidad de Córdoba Córdoba, Spain.  Her honors and awards include: Davis International Fellow to Lima, Peru; Delta Sigma Pi, Hispanic Studies Honor Society; Jane E. Ruby Fellowship; Sally Gale Gilman Award; Star of Excellence Award for campus leadership and academic excellence; and the Ujima Leadership Award for service and dedication to issues of multiculturalism.

Makiyah values volunteerism and community engagement and has served on the Advisory Board for Emerging Philanthropists of New Orleans, an initiative to engage young leaders in New Orleans in philanthropy.
